British Values

At St Peter’s Church of England Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become thoughtful, respectful and responsible members of society. British Values are an important part of our school ethos and support our Christian vision: ‘Love Others, Value Everyone’

These values help children understand their rights and responsibilities, appreciate the importance of living together harmoniously and recognise the contribution that everyone can make to our school and wider community.

We believe that British Values are not simply ideas to be taught in isolation, but principles that should be reflected in our everyday actions, relationships and decisions. They are closely aligned with our school values of Love, Respect, Honesty and Forgiveness, helping us to nurture a community where every individual feels safe, valued and included.

We integrate British Values throughout school life, exploring them through meaningful discussions whenever opportunities arise across the curriculum. They are woven into our collective worship and PSHE curriculum, where children are encouraged to reflect on fairness, responsibility, kindness, equality, justice and the importance of treating others with dignity. Through these experiences, pupils learn to express their opinions respectfully, listen to different perspectives, make responsible choices and understand how their actions affect others.

We also promote an understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and its nine protected characteristics, helping children to recognise and challenge discrimination, prejudice and unfair treatment. Our Equality Act Policy provides further details, including the protected characteristics.

Through age-appropriate teaching and discussion, we encourage children to celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and understand that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with respect. We recognise the rich diversity of our school and the wider Harborne community, valuing the different cultures, faiths, experiences and perspectives that enrich our lives together.

Ultimately, at St Peter’s, promoting British Values is about helping every child to develop a strong sense of belonging, understand their role in a democratic and diverse society, and learn how to make a positive difference to the world around them. We want our children to leave St Peter’s knowing that we can celebrate our differences, respect one another and live out our vision by loving others and valuing everyone.
