  • Speech & Language

At St Peters speech, language, and communication are the foundation of everything we do. Every child needs to be able to understand language, express their thoughts, and communicate clearly to learn, build friendships, and thrive.

Good communication skills are vital for your child’s journey through primary school. They directly impact:

    • Learning & Literacy: Reading, writing, and understanding the curriculum.
    • Social Skills: Making friends, sharing, and playing happily in the playground.
    • Emotional Well-being: Feeling confident, happy, and able to express feelings.

To support our children we use a three tiered approach:

    • For All Children: Every classroom is designed to be communication-friendly. Teachers use visual timetables, clear and simplified instructions, vocabulary walls, and dedicated "thinking time" to give all pupils the space to process information.
    • Targeted Support (Small Groups): If a child needs an extra boost with their talking, listening, or vocabulary, we run small, friendly catch-up groups.
    • Specialist Support (1:1's): For children with deep-seated or long-term speech and language difficulties, we work hand-in-hand with external NHS Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) to deliver tailored, one-to-one support plans.

Children develop at different rates, but if you notice your child struggling to follow instructions, find the right words, or pronounce speech sounds clearly, we are here to help.

Please speak to your child’s class teacher or our school SENDCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) so we can explore how best to support them.
