Lead Volunteer: Helen Whitehead (governor)

Year group: 3

"My name is Helen Whitehead and as well as being a foundation school governor, I also go into school every Tuesday to hear pupils in year 3 read their staged books. You may have seen my entries which are rarely in black or blue in their reading diaries. I love hearing this age group read, whether they are already accomplished readers or whether reading is something they find hard. My favourite staged books are Biff, Chip and Kipper adventures ( I love Gran, she is so mischievous) and Planet X adventures with Nok and his friends, oh and the poetry books. I love showing children the rhythms and rhymes ( or no rhymes). I volunteer to do this because I was very fortunate to be reading books whilst I was still at nursery, which they had to smuggle out to me in paper bags , because in the 70s, they didn't want you to read before you started school. From that beginning I formed a lifelong love of books. I read fiction, crochet and knotting patterns, poetry, textbooks and more recently I have been delving into local history of the school, the church and more recently the annexation documents and preparatory negotiations for Harborne to become part of Birmingham in 1891 to try and save Harborne Library. It is a real highlight hearing the children read, and if you can spare a couple of hours, once the safer recruitment checks are all done, I would recommend it to anyone. "
